Description
Is the starter switch on your classic Rolls-Royce or Bentley faulty, missing or worn out? Part number UD4181 is the correct replacement Lucas push-button starter switch for all post-war Crewe-built models from 1946 through to approximately 1969 — one of the most universally fitted electrical components across the entire heritage Rolls-Royce and Bentley range.
This is the original-style Lucas push-button starter switch, typically mounted inside the engine bay. When pressed, it completes the circuit to the starter motor, cranking the engine. On these classic models the starter switch is a separate component from the ignition switch — a design feature that gives useful redundancy and allows the engine to be started from the engine bay during servicing.
This is a new aftermarket replacement part, cross-referencing the original UD4181 specification. The related rubber boot for this switch is available separately under reference UD4181BOOT — worth replacing at the same time if your original boot is cracked or missing, as it protects the switch contacts from moisture and contamination.
Signs your starter switch needs replacing: Engine fails to crank when the starter button is pressed, intermittent starting, starter motor runs but fails to engage, visible corrosion or damage to the switch contacts, or the switch button feels loose or unresponsive.
Fitment — all post-war models 1946 to approximately 1969: Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith — 1946 to 1959, Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn — 1949 to 1955, Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud I, II & III — 1955 to 1966, Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow I — 1965 to approximately 1969, Bentley MkVI — 1946 to 1952, Bentley R Type — 1952 to 1955, Bentley S1, S2 & S3 — 1955 to 1966, Bentley T1 — 1965 to approximately 1969.
