These were the last motorcars developed entirely under the Vickers ownership period, and the last to share a common platform between Rolls-Royce and Bentley before the two marques were separated following BMW's acquisition of the Rolls-Royce name.

Both models launched with a BMW-developed 5.4-liter V12 engine. However, Bentley enthusiasts demanded the return of the legendary 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V8 — and in 1999 the Arnage Red Label arrived with the Cosworth-developed V8 reinstated, producing 400 horsepower and an enormous 619 lb-ft of torque. The original V12 version continued briefly as the Arnage Green Label before being discontinued. The V8 Arnage immediately established itself as one of the most powerful and characterful luxury saloons of its era — combining breathtaking performance with traditional Bentley craftsmanship.

Following Bentley's acquisition by Volkswagen Group, the Arnage range was progressively developed and expanded through one of the longest production runs in modern luxury car history.
