History of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud & Bentley S Series
The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud debuted in April 1955 as the direct successor to the Silver Dawn, sharing its predecessor's all-steel factory body but riding on a new and significantly strengthened separate chassis. At launch, the Silver Cloud I was powered by the proven 4,887cc inline six-cylinder engine inherited from the R Type — smooth, refined and well-proven in service. Its Bentley equivalent, the S1, used the same drivetrain and was mechanically identical in all but badge and minor trim details.
The most significant development in the Silver Cloud's history came in 1959 with the introduction of the Silver Cloud II and Bentley S2. These models introduced the all-new 6,230cc V8 engine — constructed entirely from aluminum alloy, a remarkable engineering achievement for the era. The new V8 transformed the driving character of the car, delivering effortless performance while maintaining the legendary Rolls-Royce refinement. This engine architecture, continuously developed, remained the foundation of Crewe-built V8 models until 2020.
The Silver Cloud III and Bentley S3 arrived in 1962 with a series of visual and mechanical refinements. The most obvious change was the adoption of twin headlamps, giving the front of the car a lower, wider appearance. The radiator grille was shortened slightly, and the hood line was lowered to match. Power output from the V8 was increased through improved carburetion, and power-assisted steering became standard equipment. Long wheelbase versions of all three series were produced, as were coachbuilt variants by leading coachbuilders including the iconic Bentley S Series Continental by H.J. Mulliner and Park Ward.
