History of the Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn & Bentley MkVI

When production resumed at Crewe after the Second World War, Rolls-Royce and Bentley shared a common technical platform for the first time in the marques' history. The Bentley MkVI was the first model to leave the factory in 1946, initially powered by a 4,257cc inline six-cylinder engine that was later enlarged to 4,566cc. The Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith followed in 1947, available exclusively as a rolling chassis for coachbuilders. The Silver Dawn arrived in 1949 as the first Rolls-Royce to be offered with a standard factory steel body — a significant departure from the bespoke coachbuilt tradition.

The Silver Dawn and Bentley MkVI share the same chassis, front and rear suspension, drum brake system and drivetrain. The only significant mechanical difference between the two is the carburetor — a single Stromberg or Zenith unit on the Silver Dawn versus the twin SU carburetors of the MkVI. This close technical relationship means that the majority of mechanical, electrical and body components are interchangeable, and our parts listings specify exact fitment across all variants.

In August 1952 the MkVI was replaced by the Bentley R Type, which introduced a larger 4,887cc engine and a significantly enlarged trunk — effectively a bigger boot in a standard steel body.
