What Braking System Does the Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn Use?

The Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn and its contemporaries — the Silver Wraith, Bentley MkVI and R Type — use a semi-hydraulic drum brake system with a mechanical servo. The front brakes are operated hydraulically via wheel cylinders, while the rear brakes are additionally assisted by a gearbox-driven mechanical servo. This design provides a degree of redundancy — if hydraulic pressure is lost, the mechanical servo still provides partial rear braking. The system uses Lockheed-type hydraulic components and requires correct brake fluid specification. These cars do not use disc brakes — they remained on drum brakes throughout their entire production run from 1946 to 1955.
