The water pump on these cars is belt-driven from the front of the engine and is responsible for circulating coolant throughout the engine and heating system. Pump failure typically presents as coolant leaking from the weep hole on the front of the engine, bearing noise from the front of the engine under the belt, coolant loss with no visible external leak, or engine overheating at normal operating temperature.
When replacing the water pump it is strongly recommended to replace the auxiliary drive belt, thermostat and thermostat housing gaskets at the same time. These components are all accessible during a water pump replacement and combining these jobs saves significant labour time on these cars.
